General Info

Description

Mydriacyl ophthalmic solution's active compound is Tropicamide – an anticholinergic (or muscarinic antagonist) with pharmacological action similar to atropine.

Indications:

- dilating the pupil (mydriasis) to perform fundoscopy (or ophthalmoscopy) – examination of the fundus of the eye and other structures like retina, optic disc, macula, and fovea;

- relaxing the muscles in the eye (ycloplegia), which aids testing the vision (cycloplegic refraction);

- dilating the pupil or relaxing the eye before or after eye surgery.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Tropicamide works by relaxing the muscles of the eye to cause the pupil to dilate or widen. It blocks muscarinic receptors in the muscles of the eye, responsible for controlling the size of the pupil and the shape of the lens. By inhibiting these receptors, Tropicamide dilates the pupil, making it easier to perform fundoscopy. Tropicamide also temporarily paralyzes the muscles that help the eye focus (cycloplegia).

Dosage

Mydriacyl ophthalmic solution is for use in eyes only. Do not get eye drops in your mouth or nose.

Instill 1-2 drops in each eye 15-20 minutes before examining the eye.

Pupil dilation usually reverses within 4 to 8 hours after use.

Precautions:

Mydriacyl solution is for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.

Mydriacyl solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Mydriacyl immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Remove contact lenses before using Mydriacyl ophthalmic solution. If you normally wear contact lenses, do not wear them again until your doctor advises you do so.

If you are using any other eye medications, leave about 10 between applying each one.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at cool room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use within one month after opening a container. Keep out of the reach of children.
